Marcel Marceau Handwritten Postcard

This is a handwritten postcard from "Bip the Clown", the famous Marcel Marceau. Marceau was the master of silence and was a huge inspiration for Michael Jackson, influencing many of Michael's own dance steps including the moonwalk.

Director and choreographer, Vincent Paterson, studied acting at Dickinson College and it is there where he met Marcel Marceau. Marceau had dinner with Vincent and several of Vincent's avant garde theatre troupe members and a friendship blossomed.

This is a postcard Vincent received from Marceau. Marceau was performing in Arizona at the time and sent this postcard inviting Vincent and his classmates to go see him perform in Chicago. Vincent took Marceau up on his offer and saw Marceau perform in Chicago front and center.

Vincent would go on to work with Michael Jackson for over 15 years, which is ironic because Michael Jackson idolized Marcel Marceau. What an incredible full circle moment it would turn out to be.

The Vincent Paterson Collection

This comes from the collection of world-renowned director and choreographer, Vincent Paterson. Most music lovers are familiar with Vincent's work collaborating with two of the most influential music artists ever, Michael Jackson and Madonna, but his career spans just about every genre of the entertainment industry.

Vincent's relationship with Michael Jackson began when he was cast as one of the gang leaders in Michael Jackson's iconic short film/music video, Beat It. Vincent would go on to work with Michael for another 15 years, choreographing the short film for Smooth Criminal, Michael's Super Bowl XXVII Halftime Show, his performance at the Grammy's, as well as creating Michael's first solo tour, the Bad Tour. With Madonna, Vincent choreographed her Express Yourself music video, the movie Evita, her performance at the Academy Awards, her famous Vogue performance as Marie Antoinette at the MTV Awards, as well as directing and choreographing the Blond Ambition Tour.

Vincent has also been a part of some of the greatest movies with music and dance. Paterson directed and choreographed the musical sequences in Lars Von Trier's film Dancer in the Dark, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, he choreographed The Birdcage (Mike Nichols), Hook (Steven Spielberg), and ABC's South Pacific starring Glenn Close.

Dance would not be what it is today without Vincent Paterson. He brought character development and storytelling to choreography which had not been present in the art form for many years. What an amazing one-of-a-kind collection.
