Description

These are a pair of vintage Neve 31102 mic preamps from the collection of music producer John Alagia. The Neve 31102 were initially found in the 8058, 8068, and 8088 consoles.

For over two decades these preamps have been used by a veritable mosaic of pop talent. Alagia says that he’s used these 31102s on records for John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews, Lifehouse, Rachael Yamagata, Mandy Moore, the list goes on and on. It’s practically a who’s who of the early 2000s music landscape. “I recorded all of Room For Squares’ (John Mayer) vocals, guitars, pretty much a lot of that record was done through those preamps along with Jason Mraz’s first record Waiting for My Rocket to Come. I also did Brett Dennen, the band Lifehouse--vocals and guitars through those preamps.” Alagia himself has confirmed that these 31102s were used throughout the majority of his career, making this console an especially one-of-a-kind product. “Basically almost everything I’ve recorded, with the exception of a couple of other projects where I didn’t record at my studio, everything was recorded through those preamps. Those were my go-to’s for over twenty years.”

They are widely considered to be one of the best-sounding class-A mic pre/EQ modules to ever be manufactured by Neve.

They are quite popular amongst those in the know. They’ve been used to mix Appetite For Destruction by Guns N Roses, on the Goo Goo Dolls’ Magnetic for drums and electric guitar, St. Vincent’s self-titled 4th studio album for guitars and vocals, and Rod Stewart’s vocals for his Time album. Other artists from Primus and Metallica to My Morning Jacket and The Red Hot Chili Peppers have utilized the distinct tone of the Neve 8068 and 31102 EQ while in the studio.

With this console, you will imbue anything you record with a timelessly crisp aura that only a name like Neve can provide.

Music industry veteran and three-time Grammy Award nominee John Alagia should be considered one of the architects of the early 2000s pop soundscape.

He’s produced, engineered, mixed, wrote, and collaborated with John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews, Lifehouse, Rachael Yamagata, Mandy Moore, Vertical Horizon, O.A.R., Liz Phair, Ben Folds Five, and tons more. Alagia helped guide countless stars towards the top of the charts with his warm, polite, and friendly demeanor for over twenty years, even getting to work with legends like Herbie Hancock and Paul Simon.

In an interview with Mix Online, Alagia emphasized that his responsibility as a producer is “To create a team of people that will achieve the best results for the artist. You’ve got to have mutual respect with the people you work with. Music is a wonderful mystery, and the making of it, the process, should never be taken too seriously. Focus and have a good time at it.”

With a career as far-reaching as Alagia’s, it’s no wonder he’s had to sell off some of the equipment he’s accumulated over the decades in the music biz. To listen to him talk about letting this equipment go, you would hear the aching melancholy in his voice. “I’ve enjoyed these things very much. They’re just great pieces of gear.” But he’s also learned to be quite zen and accepting of this much-needed reshuffling of his treasures. “I have so much gear all over the place that I just don’t need it all. I mean, I have more guitars than--I have more of everything than I could ever need. You don’t need much, essentially. As I get older, less is more.”
